Following are recent examples of representative matters handled by PB&L attorneys:

WilTel v. Property Tax Division
Parsons Behle & Latimer attorneys represented WilTel in a property tax case pending before the Utah State Tax Commission. WilTel, a subsidiary of WorldCom, Inc., merged with MCI to form the second largest telecommunications corporation in America. At issue in this case was whether intangibles (contracts, customer base, trademarks, patents, etc.) could be taxed under Utah law.

Kennecott v. Auditing Division
Representing Kennecott in a sales tax case concerning the purchase of machinery and equipment for use in its expanded smelter and refinery operations and whether these items are exempt from Utah sales and use taxes. More than $9 million in taxes are at issue.

Hercules v. Tax Commission
Tax attorneys are representing Hercules Inc. in a corporate franchise tax case pending before the Utah Supreme Court. At issue is whether Hercules owes corporate franchise taxes for the gain on its 1987 sale of stock in an affiliate corporation.
